Rarity by Creation Year
One of the most intuitive scarcity metrics in Bitcoin is the supply held in UTXOs created during a specific calendar year. These year strata provide a clear lens into how many coins from each era remain unspent — and thus, how rare each vintage truly is.
This daily snapshot tracks supply by year of coin origin.

Rarity Tier Definitions
- Legendary (<0.5M BTC remaining): Effectively extinct in liquid supply. Any movement is a major on-chain event.
- Mythic (0.5–1.0M BTC): Ultra-rare. These coins are the preserve of long-term holders and collectors.
- Rare (1.0–2.0M BTC): Highly scarce. Periodic small-volume distributions occur, but bulk holders rarely sell.
- Scarce (2.0–5.0M BTC): Noticeable scarcity. Tradeable in meaningful size but still limited relative to new supply.
- Common (5.0–10.0M BTC): Moderate availability. Most mid-term holders sit in this tier.
- Abundant (>10.0M BTC): High availability. Recent-cycle coins in active circulation.
Notable Trends
The 2013 Drawdown
The 2013 vintage saw a 0.19% weekly decrease — the largest proportional outflow of any year stratum. This aligns with our whale movement report, which identified 2013-era UTXOs as the most active vintage cohort this quarter.
2017: The Tightest Hands
Despite representing 2.1% of supply, 2017 coins show near-zero outflow (+0.01%, within noise). This is remarkable given 2017 was the first retail bull run, suggesting that first-time buyers from that era have become some of Bitcoin’s most committed long-term holders.
Post-2024 Coins: The Liquid Majority
Coins minted from 2024 onward now constitute 38.3% of supply — the largest stratum. This is the active trading base and is expected to grow as new issuance and cycle speculation continue.
Methodological Notes
- Data is sourced from year-of-origin classification on UTXO creation timestamps.
- Coins may have been transacted within their year band (sent from one 2024 UTXO to another) — we track UTXOs by creation year, not the year of first acquisition.
- Miner-vintage attribution for pre-2020 coins carries ±1.5% margin of error.
